Tried to use this with a deore shifter but the metal ball bit on the end of the cable that holds it in the shifter is far to big. Would've thought a 'universal' gear cable would be made to work with a popular shimano shifter :/

I'm sorry to read that this cable did not fit in your shifter. This is indeed an universal item and I can't for the life of me figure out why it did not fit. Only two reasons spring to mind. Either the seating hole in the shifter had a contaminate or was damaged (unlikely) or that for some reason, the cable end has a defect (extremely rare) but the most probable culprit in this instance.
I can only apologise for this and the time you've wasted. Please feel free to return it and swap it for a new one.
